The Acrylic Paint
Two types of solvents are oil-based, such as thinner, or water-based, such as water. Paints use one of these two solvents based on their composition. Acrylic paint has a water base, and regular water is used as its solvent. Average water is the most affordable solvent for this type of paint and can be easily accessed.
How to mix acrylic paint with water
A high concentration of the paint is not suitable for some places and only causes a waste of materials. On the other hand, the low concentration of paint makes it not stick to the surface or is not easy to use. Of course, oil acrylic paint can also be used in some cases.
Usually, the colour concentration is different depending on the surface it is used for. But for internal walls, a ratio of four to one is used. For example, one kilo of water is added for every four kilos of acrylic paint. This ratio will be higher for cement walls.
History of acrylic paint
Acrylic is a kind of chemical paint with durability and brightness. It was first used in the automobile industry and was recently used in various building paintings. Acrylic paints are divided into two categories: oil base and water base. Especially the kind that dissolves easily in water dries quickly, and creates a challenging and invulnerable surface. However, this type of paint lacks the fineness, depth, and polish of solvent-based oil or acrylic paint. Acrylic paints are very versatile and are suitable for creating texture on surfaces. Because they have a high concentration and dry quickly, this paint is flexible and can be used on all surfaces, including paper pulp, fabric, and shoes.
Acrylic paint was first made in the 1950s using a synthetic protein to bind pigments. Because you can dilute it with water, it can look like a watercolour or an oil painting. Depending on how much water is added, it can create a thin or thick film and create unique properties you cannot achieve with other materials. Acrylic paint becomes waterproof when it dries. The exciting thing about this type of paint is that they are much easier to work with than oil paints. Since the base of these paints is water, they are easy to apply and dry quickly. Therefore, in a short time, you can use two layers of colour for the desired surface and have a smooth and uniform coating.
Types of acrylic paint
Acrylic paint has three types; matte, semi-matte, and glossy. Its matte kind does not have all the possible properties, including washability and strength.
Glossy acrylic paint is a group of acrylic paints that use unique pigments and additives in their structure. In addition to the differences in appearance, these colours differ from other types in durability and coverage. Glossy acrylic has a higher range and durability and is completely washable. While matte acrylic is not easily washed. Because of these features, polished acrylic is considered the most suitable paint for construction applications.
Acrylic Paints Attributes
• It is transparent
• It is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial
• High adhesive
•You can apply it with a brush, gun, roller, and airless spray.
• The expiration date of shiny acrylic paints is about two years. But the best consumption time is reported up to 30 months after production.
How to make acrylic paint shiny
There is another way to polish acrylic paints. In this method, the medium is added to the colour. Mediums can make acrylic paints glossy, matte, diluted, or thick and improve the surface tension of the colour. These materials have no pigment and are milky in colour. But they become colourless after drying. So don't worry about the colour change.
While the painting is finished, you can use a final cover with a medium to make the surface shinier than before. This way, by using glossy acrylic varnish and a coating of acrylic resins, we stabilize the character's colour, help maintain its properties, and protect the surface against moisture and pollution. These materials make the colours shiny and vivid. These varnishes are produced in two types, glossy and semi-matte.
Advantages and disadvantages of acrylic paint
The advantages of acrylic paint are:
· Washable
· High drying speed
· Ease of implementation
· Can be diluted with water
· Excellent wear resistance
· Resistance to sunlight or UV or ultraviolet light
· Environmentally friendly
· High coverage
· No unpleasant smell
· Made of the best raw materials and high technology
· No sensitivity
· Suitable for plaster, cement, and brick surfaces
· It is anti-bacterial and anti-mould
The brush mark will be apparent if water-based acrylic paint is applied with a brush on smooth and polished surfaces. This colour is less shiny than others. Due to the chemical compounds in this paint, the container is filled with latex pieces due to the stickiness and drying speed of this product.
Application
You can use acrylic paints on all surfaces. It does not matter if these surfaces are plaster, concrete, or brick. You can also use acrylic paints on interior and exterior surfaces. It means you can also use it on the facade of the building. Acrylic paints also have anti-rust types that are used for metal surfaces.
To use this paint, you must:
• Stir all colours thoroughly before use.
• Do not use it outdoors under direct sunlight.
• If it is likely to rain in the next 3-4 hours, apply exterior acrylic paints.
• Do not apply it for indoor and outdoor use on wet surfaces.
• The suitable temperature range for applying this paint is 10-35°C.
• Do not paint in a relative humidity of more than 80%.
• Wash the used tools with water immediately after finishing the work and store them in a container containing oil or another solvent.
• If these colours are spilled on clothes, you should wash them immediately with warm water and soap; otherwise, they will be irreversible after drying.
