Painting

Brick is a wonderful choice for your home’s exterior. Not only can it look great, but it provides a powerful barrier against moisture and dirt. However, over time your brick will succumb to the elements and show signs of wear and tear. Fortunately, these worn, older bricks can be brought back to a beautiful state with just a bit of paint.

If your home has brick, then you may want to consider painting it every now and then, even if the brick isn’t noticeably worn out by the weather. Repainting your brick can give your house an entirely new personality; it’s a chance to turn your home’s exterior into a better reflection of you and your sense of style.

Beyond simply making your home look better, there are a number of benefits that come with painting or repainting your home’s brick.

The Benefits Of Painting Your Home’s Brick Exterior

If you’re looking to increase your home’s curb appeal and value, then painting your home’s exterior brick is a fantastic idea. Brick will deteriorate due to moisture and extended time in the sun, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Painting your home’s brick exterior before there is deterioration is a great way to prevent moisture from leaking into the brick, which causes deterioration. Some paint will act as a sealant, preventing further deterioration of your bricks.

Brick is a porous material, so if you leave your bricks unpainted they will trap and accumulate dirt, which can be very difficult to clean. If your home’s brick is left to build up dirt and debris over time you may run into more serious problems like mold and limescale. Bricks need to be cleaned now and then, there’s no getting around that. However, if you paint your brick before there’s deterioration you will be giving yourself a smooth, even surface, then your brick will not need to be cleaned nearly as often. The smooth, painted surface also makes it much easier to clean with a simple power wash.

Depending on where you’re located in the world and what kind of climate you live in, your brick may not last as long as it would in other parts of the world. If the climate is very hot then the brick will fade more easily, and if your climate is very cold the winds and the snow tend to diminish the lustre of the brick. Be sure to take this into account when you’re considering painting your home’s brick.

The best thing you can do to prevent deterioration of your brick is to paint them early on before there is any damage. Painting brick is a permanent change - you won’t be able to go back and remove the paint once it is on. You will also have to periodically repaint the brick because like all paint jobs there will be flaking over time. Because painting brick is a decision that can’t be reversed, it is best to hire a professional to do the job. They know which tools to use in which scenarios, and they won’t do any damage to the brick (assuming they’re actually professional!)
